Frequently Asked Questions

What is BodyMind Centering® and how will it help me?

BodyMind Centering is integrated conscious movement. It will give you greater flexibility, coordination and awareness. It develops mindfulness based on awareness of sensation and cognition. It is useful for healing injuries, gaining optimal performance, and balancing stress. It provides the physical foundation for intimate relating. The book, "Contact Improvisation and BodyMind Centering", is loaded with fun physical exercises you can explore alone or with a partner. It is available through the catalog.

What is developmental movement and how do you apply it with both infants and adults?

Developmental movement is the learning of the patterns an infant explores prior to walking. It includes brain development, nerve integration and reflex activity, and attention to sensation. I use it to help infants enhance their crawling and motor skills and for the same reasons with adults. It is learned through touch and movement and integrated through repetition. The book "From Conception to Crawling" and video set by the same name help to teach and learn this material. They are available in the catalog.

What can I expect from a bodymind psychotherapy session?

You can expect to have integrated feelings, a greater sense of vitality, and to be able to handle intimacy and intensity. Your relationships will improve and you will find balance in your life. You will probably enjoy life more.

How does a bodymind psychotherapy session work?

Over time you build in the support that allows you to flourish emotionally, spiritually and mentally. During a session, I look for these things: How well is your body supported to engage in life? How does energy move through your body? What happens under stress, and how does this affect your intimate relationships? How can you gain more use of your whole self so you are balanced and nourished. Are your head, heart, and gut integrated? I help you gain awareness of behavior patterns, stay present to sensation, and develop tools for change.

Will your healthy sexuality courses improve my relationship or just my sexuality?

Both, if you are willing to apply the tools and develop the ability to stay present in your heart, body and mind. Courses have both information and techniques for useful physical practices and provide a foundation for you to become aware of what it takes to live in intimacy.

What is Playback to Youth. How can it happen for my kids?

Playback to Youth is a project to bring Playback Theater into the public school system. Playback Theater is a simple yet profound way of developing intimacy within communities. By sharing personal stories and seeing them played back by their friends, youth tend to feel the human connection within their differing life experiences.

Playback can happen for your kids when we have enough people willing to participate in the project. Join us to learn the form and host a group in your local school. The project design includes creating service learning credits for participating high school and middle school youth, who then will perform in their own school and be available as a resource for middle and elementary schools.

What is Contact Improvisation and where does it happen?

Contact Improvisation is the most pleasurable, playful and fun form of movement I do as an adult. It involves awareness skills, playful expression, touch via the movement connection, and it improves coordination. It is also a way to connect with a grassroots community all over the world of people who love to move.

Contact can happen anywhere. You may start it in your own community. My book, Contact Improvisation and BodyMind Centering, is a great resource for starting local jams. It is filled with exercises. Contact happens in many communities world wide – see www.contactquarterly.com for listings in your area. For local Boulder events, contact bouldercontactimprov@yahoogroups.com.
